The Problem When trying to save as site template and the site contains some lookup field you might get Microsoft.SharePoint.SPException: Error exporting the site field named "SomeLookupField” exception. I am unable to save a brand new site as a site template. Issue: Error exporting the list named "Announcements" at the URL: Lists/Announcements If you rename the list and try to save as a template again it will just give the same error

Since your site had no issues previously, I would also recommend to restore a backup of the site from the database if possible. Usually related to error #1 above, this error indicates the default Site Columns are missing and thus SharePoint is unable to build a functional Site Template.
Try saving the subsite as a template again, it should succeed.
